Steve Smith is unlikely to be retained by Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the new Indian Premier League season 2021, as per Sports Today (IPL). The franchise could release Smith, who is the captain of the Rajasthan Royals, ahead of the player auction in February. By January 20, the franchises were asked to release the final list of retained players.
On Sunday, after he was captured on tape, Steve Smith found himself at the core of another controversy, scuffing the pitch during Day 5 of the third test in Sydney between India and Australia. By rubbing his shoes on the pitch during a drinks break, Smith was spotted attempting to remove the batting guard of Indian batsman Rishabh Pant.
Fans and former cricketers on social media slammed Smith to the left, right, and middle. Although some called his act “unsportsmanly,” for his controversial acts, some went on to label him a “cheat.” Smith seems to have more bad news in store for him after gathering attention for all the wrong reasons during the third Test.
In the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Smith was part of the Rajasthan Royals until the team got banned from the IPL for two years. The only player retained by the 2008 champions ahead of the 2018 season was the former Australian captain.
In 2019, Smith returned to the Royals side and halfway through the 2019 season he was handed over the captaincy. During the 2020 season, he captained Rajasthan Royals, which was staged in the UAE. Smith’s results for his side, however, in IPL 2020 were not impressive.
