Delhi Capitals (DC) eventually played their maiden IPL final last year to end the 12-year drought. The Shreyas Ied-led side fell short in what could be considered a one-sided affair against the reigning champions, Mumbai Indians. Despite the loss, when they defied the odds to reach the final, DC was praised. The IPL 2021 Auction for Delhi Capitals will be interesting as they have some top-class players in their dugout.
During the tournament, they lost the services of senior bowlers Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra and were hit with injuries to R Ashwin and Rishabh Pant. Though Rishabh was out for three, Ashwin missed two matches.
The DC team leadership will try to fix a variety of areas in which they struggle and hope to create the best team by entering the next season.
DC has a young captain in Iyer, and he will probably lead DC for a full decade if things go according to plan.
For now, the management’s attention will be on auctioning IPL 2021. Today, we look at three Delhi Capitals players that could be targeted in the IPL 2021 auction –
Despite the presence of a number of openers in their line-up, DC struggled on the opening front, which also saw Marcus Stoinis opening the innings in the second Qualifier. DC will surely look for a full-time opener to partner with Shikhar Dhawan as the management isn’t expected to give Prithvi Shaw a long rope in IPL 2021.
Jason Roy, who was part of DC for IPL 2020, will be one of the best options available if he decides to enter the auction. Of course, he was part of DC’s plans last year, the reason why they bought him for Rs 1.5 crore. Roy is a well-established white-ball opener in international cricket and has proven credentials in leagues around the world.
Apart from a consistent opener, DC also lacked a power-hitter towards the end. Shimron Hetmyer, who had joined the franchise for Rs 7.75 crore, did strike at 148.00 but could not get big scores even when he had opportunities to do so. Surely, he couldn’t do justice to the mega-amount and looks set to be released.
DC will look for his replacement and Carlos Brathwaite, who has played for DC in past, could be the one they might go for. A complete package on the field, Brathwaite hasn’t got regular chances in IPL and he can certainly do the job if given a proper run. Unlike last year, the former West Indies T20I captain is expected to draw a bid and DC could be one of the teams which might go for him.
An injury to Rishabh Pant disturbed DC’s playing XI in a big way as they had to drop Shimron Hetmyer to bring in Alex Carey. It was because the team management probably forgot to buy Rishabh’s Indian backup and they will definitely go for one now.
KS Bharat, who has been part of DC in past, is one of the options that the management might consider. He will not be a confirmed selection in the playing XI but can surely do the wicketkeeping job if the regular wicketkeeper sits out due to any reason.
KS Bharat, who has been part of Test and ODI squads as a backup, has scored 93 runs in three matches in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2020/21.
