Day 3 began with India at 294/7. With the match already tilted towards India, one would have expected England to come out with all guns blazing on Day 3. But, that wasn’t the case. Because the Indian youngsters completely dominated the game leaving England embarrassed and help India reached the WTC final 2021 . Here’s how the day went-
England made a mistake at the very beginning of Day 3. They started with Dom Bess. Bess hadn’t looked good this entire match. Therefore, the wayward bowling from the off-spinner just provided Axar and Sundar with the opportunity to settle down. Anderson and Stokes also tried from the other end. But they weren’t able to break the partnership for the first hour of the game. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar made a 106-runs 8th wicket partnership. The breakthrough came in the form of an unnecessary run-out. Axar needlessly tried to take a run of a shot from Washington which Washi rightfully denied. But, by then Axar had already left the crease and he couldn’t make it back in time. This run-out also triggered a collapse due to which Washington Sundar was left stranded at 96*. India’s first innings total was 365, with a lead of 160.
After lunch, England had just one objective i.e to bat and bat for longer. There was enough time to gradually score runs and take the lead. But, the Indian spinners had some other motive. Both, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin ended the second session with three wickets each. England ended the session at 91 for 6. Axar dismissed Ollie Pope, Ben Stokes, and Dm Sibley. While Ashwin was responsible for the dismissals of Joe Root, Zak Crawley, and Jonny Bairstow.
Third Session: India Qualifies for WTC Final 2021
The third Session was the obligatory session of the day. India had already won the match. They just needed to take four wickets to qualify for the final of WTC. Ben Foakes and Dan Lawrence scored 44 or the seventh wicket before Axar dismissed Foakes, courtesy of a brilliant catch by Rahane at slips. Axar then dismissed Bess to complete his yet another five-fer. The remaining two wickets were taken by Ashwin, who also completed his five-fer in this innings. England was all out for 135. India won the match by an innings and 25 runs, and the series by 3-1.
Rishabh Pant received the Man of the Match award for his brilliant counter-attacking century. While Ravichandran Ashwin received the Man of the Series Award. Ashwin has taken a total of 32 wickets in this series along with some valuable 189 runs. Fun fact- This is Ashwin’s 8th Man of the Series award. Virat Kohli also surpasses M S Dhoni to win most test matches in India.
