Rohit Sharma Scores his 7th Century
On Day 1 of the Second Test match of India vs England 2020-2021 in Chennai, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane built a brilliant 162-run partnership for the fourth wicket. But, England spinners struck twice in quick succession in the third session. Consequently, removing both set batsmen to get their side back in the game. After heading the first two sessions, Rohit scored 161 odd runs and got out of Jack Leach’s bowling. However, Rohit Sharma scored his 7th test century. Rahane also fell soon after 67 runs, leaving two new batsmen Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin at the crease.
Shubman Gill Departs for a Duck
Ravichandran Ashwin also got out for 13. Earlier, Rohit Sharma made batting look easy on a tricky turning track. And he raced away to his seventh Test hundred off just 130 balls. After electing to bat, India got off to a poor start. India lost opener Shubman Gill in the second over the innings. Shubman Gill departed for a three-ball duck as he shouldered arms and was trapped leg before by the Olly Stone delivery. Olly Stone came back in the attack, and he bowled with the old ball as England hadn’t taken the new ball which was due for the last five overs.
Virat and Pujara Fall Cheaply
Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara incorporated to steady the Indian innings with the former playing attacking shots. Rohit’s attacking approach saw him bringing up his half-century off just 47 balls. Rohit and Pujara added 85 runs for the second wicket. However, Rohit Sharma got out after scoring a decent century. But India lost Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli in quick succession as England pushed hosts on the backfoot before the lunch. Pujara got out to Jack Leach for 21. Kohli was sent packing by Moeen Ali, who cleaned him up for a duck. England did well to scalp some good wickets right towards the end of the day.
India will be looking to bat another session in order to strengthen their position in the 2nd test match.
